Courage in the Heart of the City

It takes courage and effort to learn about and love those who are different from ourselves.
The more we face the unfamiliar and unknown, the more we grow our confidence in operating in and for the world. Our annual Boston Day encourages students to take steps in this direction. Each grade visits a different neighborhood to experience. It heeds the call from Jeremiah 29 to “seek the peace and prosperity of the city.” The purpose, then, of Boston Day is to know our neighbor in order to better love our neighbor.
Whether it is our eighth graders learning about the importance of civic engagement at the Edward Kennedy Institute or our sophomores experiencing the challenges of immigration through an interactive journey in Chinatown, our students move from being observers to active participants in shaping a more just society.
Walking the Black Heritage Trail, Jenseen Johnson ’28 and her freshman class explored the untold stories of African American life in Beacon Hill during the abolition era. As she stood in front of the first integrated school in Boston, Jenseen shared, “I was marveling at how hard abolitionists fought and how much our city has evolved.”
Later, their visit to the Massachusetts State House brought the present into focus, revealing how legislative efforts continue to shape our city’s future. Jenseen observed, “There’s still so much that can happen in terms of justice in our city.” These encounters challenge our students to recognize their role in shaping the world around them with courage and purpose.
Thank you for making this day possible.
Your commitment empowers our students to take bold steps, nurturing the courage to grow, serve, and contribute to the flourishing of Boston and beyond.
